Anyone who’s followed this site knows that we at Transracial have had our issues with Joe Jervis (above) — the man and mind behind the popular blog Joe. My. God.
Despite our beef, NYC-based Jervis has found himself in the middle of some seriously silly attacks by the bad guys over at the group Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (whatever that means).
Last week, Jervis took to task the group’s President Peter LaBarbera for writing on its site that same-sex civil unions and Gay marriage “would dismantle traditional marriage”.
Unsurprisingly, Jervis’ readers were not pleased and suggestions of civil disobedience were thrown about in response to LaBarbera’s sentiments and the Maine vote earlier this month ending Gay marriage in that state.
“What I fear is that once gay and lesbian people give up hope of achieving equality through nonviolent means, there will be radicals who will begin to hunt down haters like LaBarbera and Gallagher,” wrote one respondent.
“You say this like it’s a bad thing? Maybe a bit of well organized terrorism is just what we need, er, I mean ‘civil disobedience’,” retorted another.
Those were apparently fighting words to the folks over at the right-wing Liberty Counsel — who contacted the FBI to complain about this perceived threat of Gay terror.
What with the recent Fort Hood shootings, crazed Gay gunmen only could be next!
Jervis, of course, insists no terror threat was made and suggest the real enemies here are the Christian Right — “who in an internet game of ‘Telephone’ have ratcheted up the story to the point where it looks like I, myself, have made terrorist threats.”
The Christ-folk, meanwhile, are holding their ground — and have even released a new photo-montage showing Jervis and other hirsute types in militant repose.
Jervis (sadly) has removed the original postings from his website — though we suspect this issue of “Gay terror” will not go away so easily.
Wait a second.
You link to a post of yours from the past saying you have issues with Jervis, and pointing to Pride Magazine’s mono-racial-ness….and he responded in the comments by arguing he had no editorial control over the issue, just sold ads for it.
Shouldn’t you either apologize, or argue his point, since he seems to have neatly rebutted yours?
Or does he remain convicted in your mind, not as an individual, but as a symbol of the whole elitist system that could produce such a stupid magazine as that appears to have been?
We made our point. He made his.
And you’ve made your’s.
Transracial man your problem with Joe is that unlike you he’s actually doing something to help our cause and not just sitting on the sidelines whining. Every gay organization is made up of the people who chose to join. No one is refused based on race. If there’s no black faces in the crowed it’s because no black people chose to show up. In other words if you want to see blck faces in these organizations get off your lazy ass and join. No one is going to send you a special invitation.
I didn’t realize I’d requested an invitation.
I guess my question to you, dear Mike K.
Is besides being appalled and commenting on blogs and failing to comprehend the very clear message in my posts
what are YOU doing to help your cause
in fact — do you even know what the hell your cause is?
Do any of you?
