There is something culturally, technically and morally out of whack when an out Lesbian member of Congress spends more than three and one-half minutes rallying GLBTs behind Pres. Obama’s health reform plan — and does not once mention the words AIDS or HIV!
But indeed, this was the message Rep. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin delivered today — broadcast for all to see by the Gay media masses who also apparently saw no reason to question how such an important issue could be left out of Rep. Baldwin’s speech.
Whether we like it or not, Gay men continue to comprise the vast majority of new HIV cases in the United States — a technically fatal disease that requires life-long medical care. This — more than any other fact — is reason enough for Gay folk to pay very close attention to the health debate now brewing in Washington, DC.
Not because the debate tangentially — and conveniently — touches upon more palatable topics such as same-sex marriage of the lack there of. Or even the very important issue of work-place discrimination.
But because access to adequate health care is of vital self-interest to every Gay man in this nation. Despite what many would like to believe, HIV knows no color, culture, geographic or socio-economic boundary. And despite advances in medical care, HIV is still a killer.
If you are Gay in America — then you should be concerned about the health care debate because your f-cking life depends upon it.
Sex, drugs, self-respect and self-destruction are not easy subjects to tackle. But as we all know, silence still equals death.
Shame on you Rep. Baldwin! Some 56,000 new HIV cases are diagnosed each year — three decades into the epidemic!
And nowhere in your Health Care platform do you ever mention HIV and AIDS, either!
If you even you can’t speak this truth for your OWN community — if like Reagan and Pope John Paul II before you cannot even utter the word AIDS — who the hell will?
this is unbelievable. I am passing around asap
really
thanks!
When I lived in San Francisco back in the day, Mayor Feinstein squelched news of the early, rising AIDS crisis until she had won the bid for SF as the 1984 Democratic Convention site.
If history teaches us anything, it’s that politicians can largely be depended upon to put their political agenda ahead of their constituency.
here here
such a phony!
unbelievable, and very sad
