A British theme park has taken the concept of public hygiene to odd — and slightly Orwellian — new levels with the introduction of new rules that ban visitors from raising their hands over their heads when temperature hit 25C/77F.
The new move is intended to prevent mass-scale body odor — which thrill ride-filled Thorpe Park in the county of Surrey says is getting out of control due to the late summer swelter.
The first-of-its-kind ban begins today and follows a series of complaints about unruly BO levels in the Park. It also comes just a week after a a different UK theme park banned men from wearing “speedo-styled” swimwear!
“We’ve found that when the temperature tops 77F (25C) the level of unpleasant smells can become unacceptable and we do receive complaints,” says Mike Vallis, a Thorpe Park director.
With temperatures this week likely to reach well above 25 Celcius — and Thorpe Park’s rides prone to inducing fear-related sweating –Park officials felt a serious anti-funk action plan was needed.
“Our rides are really scary and people tend to sweat more than normal due to the fear and anticipation they experience while queueing up so it can get really pongy,” Vallis added. “Therefore, we felt a ban in temperatures of 25C plus would be the best way to ensure our guests have the most enjoyable experience and aren’t exposed to any unsavoury armpits.”
Thorpe Park rides will now have their own BO wardens who will ask violators to kindly refrain from raising thier arms on rides.
How Air Marshall!
As for repeat-raisers, they’ll be asked to sweat elsewhere and kicked out of the park.
With the BO ban kicking in at just 25C, clearly these folks have never spent a summer in Manhattan!
