Mermaid fever has apparently overcome the small town of Kiryat Yam in Israel’s north near Haifa, where rampant mermaid sightings have prompted city officials to offer a $1 million reward for anyone who can produce an actual picture of the fabled fish-lady.
Apparently, literally dozens of people have reported seeing a mermaid in the waters of Haifa Bay — with each claimed sighting totally unrelated to the others.
So in an effort to actually prove the mermaid’s existence — and boost its public image — the town hall will offer $1 million to anyone who can prove the mermaid is real.
Catching her is not necessary, says city council spokesman Natti Zilberman, who says the suspected mermaid is indeed female-like and aquatic.
But a clear photo is required.
Of course Zilberman cannot confirm both that the mermaid is real — or that the city even has $1 million to doll out to a winner.
But still Kiryat Yam insists this is no mere publicity stunt.
