While we here in New York are contending with all sorts of nasty things in our restaurant dinners, over in Abu Dhabi, they’re taking hotel hygiene to extreme — and extremely costly — levels.
Indeed, at the city’s $3 billion Emirates Palace Hotel (above), the head chef has been fined a hefty 92,000 dirhams after health inspectors found an out-of-date tub of yogurt in his kitchen fridge.
To us folks in the USA – that’s $27,000!!!
Unsurprisingly, the chef is contesting the fine — and is now having his case heard by the emirate’s Criminal Court of Appael
The chef — known as PH — insists the yogurt was just one day past its expiration date. He also says he just works at the restaurant — and doesn’t own it or stock its refrigerators.
But Abu Dhabi apparently takes food safety very seriously — and PH could very well have to pay up.
Bummer!
A verdict is due on July 22nd.
