Although it is not exactly formal diplomatic relations, beginning today folks can fly from LAX to Havana non-stop on airplanes operated by Continental Airlines.

The weekly flights from Los Angeles are not formally offered by Continental. Rather they’re run by the charter firm Cuba Travel Services which will use Continental planes to fly Cuban Americans now eligible to visit their homeland thanks to the lifting of some travel restrictions by the Obama Administration.

Previously, under Bush II, Cuba visits were limited to every three years for the few exiles who qualified.  But Obama repealed these restrictions earlier this year — and today there are no limits on Cuba visits for folks with family on the island.

Although the new regulations are geared at allowing Cuban exiles to visit the nation, Cuba Travel Services says Cuba visits should be easier for journalists, government officials and researchers who qualify under a general license — and sports teams, religious organizations, educational facilities with specific licenses to travel.

Exciting!
