As a native San Franciscan, we were kinda totally bummed — but not exactly surprised — to receive THIS posting from our blogger buddy Michael Petrelis out on the West Coast.
Seems as if the official magazine for this week’s GLBT Pride parade contains interviews and features with lots of groovy white folk — including cover model Rachel Maddow — but not a single shot/interview/quote from a real live GLBT person of color.
Even the ads are nearly lily white.
Yes, there some nice pics of Pres. O and and a pic of James Baldwin — both men we love.
But Baldwin is dead and despite the National Enquirer rumors, we’re pretty convinced Pres. O ain’t no ‘mo.
There are no confirmed Blacks, Latins or Asians.
WTF?
Having spent years in San Fran, we can personally confirm it’s pretty pale out there.
But in this day and age, how is it that a city so prided on its liberalism and multi-cultism can produce a magazine with all the flavor of a New York Fashion Week runway show.
With recent covers of Beyonce and Mrs. O — even Anna’s Vogue has managed to go Black.
The whole SF Pride mag seems to be the handiwork of some dude called Joe Jervis — who has THIS blog and fancies himself a voice for the progressive homo-sphere.
Homo, fersure. Progress — not so much!
With so much of the current GLBT political creeping oh-so close to race-baiting — we hope Jervis’ pride publication is not a portent of things to come!

My contribution to Pride Magazine is as it has been for the last nine years, I do their advertising sales. Period. I am not the photo editor, I am not the art director, I don’t make story assignments, I don’t lay out the magazine. For the 2009 issue I conducted the cover interview with Rachel Maddow, which is the extent of my editorial involvement to date. You would know all this if you’d bothered to do a little fact-checking (journalism!) before posting this smear piece. Nice work.
