This weekend marks the anniversary of the historic Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia — which in 1967 removed all legal barriers preventing mixed-race marriages.
In case you were busy toking up during AP US History: The Lovings were a mixed-race Virginia couple (she black/he white) who essentially sued to have their marriage recognized after being arrested for sleeping in the same bed — violating what were then anti-miscegenation laws.
In other words, when Pres. O’s parents were hitched — they were breaking the law in many U.S. states.
The Lovings’ battle took five years — but the duo won!
And to celebrate, Loving Day festivities are being held across the globe — from Georgia to Japan — including the flagship fete this Sunday in NYC.
There will be free music, free food, FREE BEER and free fun — at this 6th annual event.
It’s almost a Transracial obligation to attend — perhaps after a screening of mixed-marriage movie Away We Go.
And with NY State soon to rule on same-sex unions — marriage equality of all types could not be more timely.
Especially since more than four decades after she made history — Mildred Loving was one of its biggest supporters.
Sadly, Mrs. Loving passed away in 2008, but the Lovings remain an inspiration to us all.
yes they do!
