DAILY TRAVEL GOODNESS: Olveston House on Montserrat

montserrat_480

Most folks know little about the little Caribbean island of Montserrat — except that it was almost blown to bits by a volcanic eruption a few years back.

But no matter.

Today, the volcano may still be active, but so is the island’s burgeoning tourism scene — including black-sand beaches (above).

Montserrat’s latest edition is Olveston House, the former private villa of the Beatles’ legendary producer Sir George Martin — which once welcome celebs such as Paul McCartney, Sting, Stevie Wonder and Elton John.

Following a recent re-do, the villa is now a bijoux five room guest-house with pool and excellent kitchen.

Best of all, intro rates are a mere $88/night until December.

  1. Yes – Go to Montserrat, by all means! It’s still there in spite of the volcano, and it’s beautiful and friendly. And when you get there, make reservations at Olveston House for a great dinner. You’ll enjoy the warm and personal welcome you receive from Carol (formerly of the Vue Point Hotel), and the delicious meal Margaret (formerly of Jumpin’ Jack’s) prepares for you. There’s usually fresh local fish on the menu, a barbeque buffet on Wednesday, and a more casual Pub Night on Friday. Enjoy drinks and dinner on the breezy and spacious veranda overlooking the pool, or dine inside, where, down the hallway, you can view some of Linda McCartney’s wonderful original photographs of Montserrat scenes and of various Beatles.

We haven’t stayed at Olveston House, as we have a home in Montserrat, but if the restaurant, the setting, and the warm hospitality are indications, you will have a comfortable and enjoyable stay in the guest house.

Montserrat, as they say there, is still open for business! Do yourself a favor and plan a visit soon.

  2. Hi-

I’m a long-time friend of Joe Woodman’s; he linked me to you via Facebook. I was curious about your post on Montserrat. Do you have family or other connections to the island? There seem to be many small communities of Montserratians scattered about the U.S., Canada, and England, and I keep running into them and finding a lot of small-world-type connections.

Any time and anywhere I get an opportunity to post good words about Montserrat, I do, and I was glad to see your mention. The island is still recovering from the volcano, but that doesn’t keep it from being a great vacation destination. It could really use more exposure, though, so thanks for putting it out there.

  4. Ah, a fellow volcano nut! That’s why we vacationed and built in Montserrat! Have traveled to a number of other volcano destinations around the world, but have a long list to complete. Another favorite is Santorini – go if you haven’t!
