The folks over at nifty news blog Strange Maps recently published the fanciful cartographic creation above — an imaginary map
of the West Bank morphed into an abstract archipelago.
Elegant and relevant, the map gives visual proof of the West Bank’s ongoing fragmentation and the horror this reality brings upon its residents’ lives. Its appearance comes at a pivotal time for the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process — with Pres. Obama’s new mediation team now in the region hoping to exact concessions from both sides, while new Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu appears as reluctant as ever to make a move toward coexistence.
Most disturbing of all, however, are comments by supposedly peace-loving Israeli President Shimon Peres, who is seemingly — and inexcusably — promoting further settlement development in the West Bank with sad/sorry lines such as “Israel cannot instruct settlers in existing settlements not to have children or get married,” which he said to VP Biden recently.
